Coronary Artery Disease
Coronary artery disease develops when the major blood vessels that supply your heart become damaged or diseased. Cholesterol-containing deposits (plaques) in your coronary arteries and inflammation are usually to blame for coronary artery disease.
The coronary arteries supply blood, oxygen and nutrients to your heart. A buildup of plaque can narrow these arteries, decreasing blood flow to your heart. Eventually, the reduced blood flow may cause chest pain (angina), shortness of breath, or other coronary artery disease signs and symptoms. A complete blockage can cause a heart attack.
Because coronary artery disease often develops over decades, you might not notice a problem until you have a significant blockage or a heart attack. But you can take steps to prevent and treat coronary artery disease. A healthy lifestyle can make a big impact.

Still have questions?
Your doctor can use several tests to diagnose CAD, including an electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG), stress test, coronary CT angiogram, cardiac catheterization (invasive coronary angiogram), and coronary artery calcium scan.
High blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes mellitus, a family history of heart disease, and smoking tobacco are major risk factors for CAD. Other factors such as overweight, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, increases your risk for CAD. Schedule an appointment with your doctor or health care provider and undergo an assessment to determine your risk for CAD.
The most common symptom of CAD is chest pain, also known as angina. CAD causes the arteries that rest on top of the heart muscle to become narrowed or blocked, reducing or shutting off vital blood flow to your heart muscle. When this occurs many people experience symptoms of a heart attack which include chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, pain in the arm, jaw, back, weakness, and lightheadedness. Call 911 immediately if you experience any of these symptoms.
