High Blood Pressure
High blood pressure (hypertension), is blood pressure that is higher than normal. Your blood pressure changes throughout the day based on your activities. Having blood pressure measures consistently above normal may result in a diagnosis of high blood pressure (or hypertension).
High blood pressure increases the risk of developing heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, and other health problems.

Blood pressure is measured using two numbers:
The top number, called systolic blood pressure, measures the pressure in your arteries when your heart contracts (squeezes).
The bottom number, called diastolic blood pressure, measures the pressure in your arteries when your heart relaxes between beats.
Normal blood pressure is when the systolic blood pressure is less than 120 and diastolic blood pressure is less than 80.
<120/<80 mmHg

Dietary and lifestyle changes (see examples below) are the initial steps many people with high blood pressure use to lower their blood pressure into a healthy range. Medications to lower blood pressure are often used when indicated. Talk with your doctor or health care provider on the best methods to optimize your blood pressure.
- Getting at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week (about 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week)
- Avoid smoking
- Eating a healthy diet, including limiting sodium (salt) and alcohol
- Maintaining a healthy weight
