Peripheral arterial disease
Peripheral artery disease (also called peripheral arterial disease) is a common circulatory problem in which narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to your limbs.
When you develop peripheral artery disease (PAD), your legs or arms — usually your legs — don’t receive enough blood flow to keep up with demand. This may cause symptoms, such as leg pain when walking (claudication).
Peripheral artery disease is also likely to be a sign of a buildup of fatty deposits in your arteries (atherosclerosis). This condition may narrow your arteries and reduce blood flow to your legs and, occasionally, your arms.
You often can successfully treat peripheral artery disease by exercising, eating a healthy diet and quitting tobacco in any form.

Still have questions?
The most common symptoms of lower-extremity PAD are cramping the legs, hips, buttocks, fatigue, pain, or discomfort in the leg or hip muscles while walking or climbing stairs. The pain usually resolves with rest and returns when you resume walking. In severe forms of PAD in the legs, the symptoms are present during activity and at rest. Contact your doctor or health care provider if you have been diagnosed with PAD or suspect you have this condition.
A history and physical exam will provide your doctor with early clues that you have PAD. Diagnostic tests such as an ankle-brachial index (ABI), lower extremity arterial ultrasound, lower extremity angiogram (CT, fluoroscopy, MRI) are utilized to establish a diagnosis of PAD.
Treatment of PAD is based on fixing the blocked artery and managing the risk factors/conditions that caused the PAD to develop. For severe symptomatic PAD of the lower extremities, revascularization is the treatment of choice. The blocked artery can be opened using different surgical techniques along with medications. For mild-moderate PAD, treatment includes risk factor modification, an exercise program and medications.
